John Durie started working in the film industry in 1981 and established STRATEGIC FILM MARKETING in 1993 working specifically in film marketing, theatrical distribution and creation and production of key film marketing materials - trailers, posters, distribution strategies. He has worked on over 650 films - feature as well as documentary.

He has worked or works with some of the industry's leading internationals sales and distribution companies plus Nordic and European film institutes. Durie also pioneered and ran for 15 years the original Creative Europe's STRATEGIC FILM MARKETING WORKSHOP for the MEDIA PROGRAMME, (1991) and has taught film marketing in over 30 countries from Australia, Brazil and Colombia, to Mexico the Middle East and over 20 EU countries.

For nearly 20 years he has been the industry leader in independent film marketing with Film Institutes and Funds in the Nordic region, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary providing film marketing expertise and distribution strategies for national film financing organisations, their producers and distributors. Both Denmark and Holland now enjoy a substantially increased domestic market share partly as a result of these marketing strategies implemented by Durie.

Prior to establishing STRATEGIC FILM MARKETING, John Durie held a number of prominent positions within the industry. These include co-founder, Joint MD/Director of Marketing and Director UK Theatrical for PolyGram Film International (1989-1992), Head of Sales and Marketing for The Sales Company (1986-1989), founder and Director of the London Office for Telefilm Canada (1985-1986) and Head of Promotions and Marketing, PIC Publicity (1981-1984).

Durie is co-author of Marketing & Selling Your Films Around the World and has worked on films by award-winning directors such as Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar, Robert Altman, Denys Arcand, Jean-Jacques Beineix, Ingmar Bergman, Kenneth Branagh, Joel and Ethan Coen, John Huston, Takeshi Kitano, Emir Kusturica, David Lynch, Mike Leigh, Sidney Lumet, Tim Robbins, Quentin Tarantino, Liv Ullmann and Wim Wenders.

John Durie holds a Masters of Science in Telecommunications and Film from the Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse New York. He is based in London and Cannes.
